Nirbhaya case: No hanging tomorrow as Delhi court postpones execution till further orders

A Delhi court on Friday postponed execution of death warrants of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case till further orders.

All four convicts- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Kumar Gupta and Mukesh Singh were supposed to be hanged to death on February 1.

No new date for the execution of all four men has been issued yet.

Tihar jail authorities challenged the application and told the court that only one convict’s mercy plea is pending, and the others can be hanged.

The convicts’ lawyer disagreed with Tihar jail authorities and said rules dictate that when one convict’s plea is pending the others cannot be hanged.

The original date of execution was January 22 but due to mercy petition filed by Mukesh Singh, a Delhi court set a new date, February 1 at 6 am.

All four men were convicted and sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old paramedic student in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012.

She passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while undergoing the treatment.
