The government has decided to reduce the NCERT syllabus by half, said Prakash Javadekar, Human Resource Development Minister on June 3
“The NCERT syllabus is so cramped. Hence we have decided to reduce the syllabus by half,” said Javadekar.
The draft of new National Education Policy will be tabled before the parliament by June end, he added.
The HRD Ministry proposed an amendment to the Right to Education Act, which reviews the no-detention policy and grants power to states to conduct examinations for Class 5 and 8 students.
The HRD Minister confirmed that the ministry received 37,000 suggestions on classes, lessons and subjects from teachers and other related persons to the government and the government is working on it.
The amendment will definitely bring change where a student would get time for sports and other activities and not only for cramming information. It will also enhance the relevance of sports in the school curriculum, he further added.
“While 25 states, including West Bengal, want the exams which I welcome… those who don’t want I also respect their freedom. I hope any change in no-detention policy will be a reality by August and it will be left for the respective state.”
The Amendments:
All centrally-aided school will be given library grant of Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000,
It will empower the states to conduct examinations for students of Class 5 and 8
Each centrally-aided school will get sports equipment
All primary schools will get equipment worth Rs 5,000,
All upper Primary schools will get equipment worth Rs 10,000
All SSC and HSC level schools will get equipment worth Rs 25,000
