Former minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ratan Chakraborty has claimed that Myanmar-based drug peddlers have hatched a conspiracy to assassinate Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
“There are reports with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh that drug peddlers in Myanmar are trying to liquidate Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb,” Chakraborty said.
Ratan Chakraborty further said that the drug kingpins recently had a meeting in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw to eliminate Deb.
Biplab Kumar Deb, after coming to power, had earlier launched a massive operation against drugs and Myanmar-based drug peddlers are not happy about it. Adding to it, Chakraborty said, in the last 6 months the police confiscated over 50,000 kg of narcotics including brown sugar, cannabis, heroin etc and arrested more than 200 drug peddlers.
Drug eradication was one of the agendas on which Deb had based his election campaign against the former CPI(M)-led Left government in the state. Deb claimed the drug-based economy in the state was worth Rs 1500 crore and a lot of these drugs were ultimately smuggled into Bangladesh.
“BJP activists were asked to ensure that CM Biplab Deb’s security cordon is not breached under any circumstances, so as to avert any attempt on his life,” said Chakraborty.
