Manipur on Wednesday reported its first COVID-19 related death at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.
Speaking to media persons, Director of RIMS, Prof. A. Santa, confirmed that this is the first COVID-19 fatality in the state.
The deceased 56-year-old man, a resident of Khongjom Sapam village in Thoubal district, succumbed to the disease at around 2 am on Wednesday.
The deceased was admitted to the institute on May 22 for the treatment of kidney-related issues and high blood pressure, a RIMS official said. He was tested COVID-19 positive on Sunday.
According to local media reports, the deceased had been suffering from many ailments, including chronic kidney disease and diabetes. The deceased also had multiple sessions of dialysis.
As the number of positive cases spiked in Thoubal districts, Dr. S. Ibomcha Singh, SP Thoubal district, appealed, in a video message, to the people of the state to strictly adhere to lockdown guidelines.
He further urged the people of the district, in particular, to cooperate in tackling the threat.
In the past 24 hours, 56 persons have been recovered and discharged from various hospitals and COVID Care Centers in Manipur. The number of COVID-19 positive cases in Manipur on Tuesday was 2,317.
The number of active and recovered cases is 702 and 1,615 cases respectively; the recovery rate is 69.70 percent.
