Maharashtra government withdraws consent to CBI to probe cases in state

Maharashtra government on Wednesday withdrew the general consent extended by it to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe cases in the state. The CBI will now need the state’s permission to carry out any investigation in the state.

Home department of the state issued a notification to this effect late Wednesday.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, the Government of Maharashtra hereby withdraws the consent accorded to the members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment…to exercise powers and jurisdiction under the said Act.”

The decision by Uddhav Thackeray-led government comes hours after the CBI filed a case to investigate the TRP scam on a complaint filed in Uttar Pradesh.
