M Nageswar Rao’s appointment as interim CBI director challenged in Supreme Court

The appointment of M Nageswar Rao as the interim Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was challenged by Delhi-based NGO Common Cause in the Supreme Court on Monday.

The NGO has approached the top court through senior advocate Prashant Bhushan.

Rao was made to continue as interim director hours after the removal of Alok Verma from the post of CBI Director.

Soon after resuming control as interim CBI director, Rao reverted all transfer decisions taken by Alok Verma restoring the position of officials as on January 8.

Rao, a 1986-batch IPS officer from the Odisha cadre had joined the CBI as a joint director in 2016.

A 2-1 decision by a high-powered selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with its other two members being Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Justice A.K. Sikri on January 10 decided to ease out Verma from the post of CBI Director.
