Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged people across India to switch off lights of their homes on April 5 at 9 pm for nine minutes and light up candles, lamps or mobile flashlights to mark country’s fight against the coronavirus outbreak.
He said people should maintain social distancing and not form groups while lighting up lamps or candles.
Addressing the country via a video message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people of India for their “unprecedented discipline” during the coronavirus lockdown.
“The discipline and spirit of service you have displayed during this period is unprecedented”, said Modi.
Modi further said, “the manner in which you had expressed gratitude to all those fighting against the Coronavirus on Sunday (March 22), has today become an example for all countries.”
“Many are replicating it now,” he added.
