Kerala Court extends the judicial custody of Bishop Franco Mulakkal till October 20

Kerala court extended the judicial custody of Bishop Franco Mulakkal on Saturday till October 20.

Mulakkal was arrested on the charge of raping a nun between 2014 and 2016. He was produced before Judge M Lekshmi of the Pala Judicial Magisterial Court, who extended his judicial custody for another two weeks.

The Kerala High Court on October 3 rejected the bail application of Bishop Franco Mulakkal, the Catholic bishop on the grounds that there is apparent evidence against the bishop.

The court also added that the allegations against the bishop are serious and he occupies a high position in the church that he can influence witnesses.

The Bishop was arrested on September 21 after three days of questioning and on September 24 he was sent to judicial custody by the very same court.

Franco Mulakkal, who heads the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar, Punjab, is the first bishop in the country to be arrested on rape charges.
