Kashmiri guide dies rescuing tourists after their boat capsized

A tourist guide lost his life while saving tourists after a boat capsized in Lidder river near Mawoora area of Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Rauf Ahmad Dar’s body was retrieved from the river near Bhawani Bridge on Saturday morning, the day after his heroics.

According to the officials, five tourists including two foreigners were on the boat when it capsized at a rafting point in Mawoora  Pahalgam on Friday after it was caught in gusty winds. All tourists onboard fell in the Lidder river.

Dar who is being described as a braveheart managed to save all the tourists but went missing in the aftermath.

Search and rescue mission was launched by the local police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). However, only his body could be recovered on Saturday morning near the Bhawani bridge from Lidder.

Dar’s body was handed over to his relatives after completion of medical and legal formalities.

Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to salute the braveheart who died while saving lives.

“My salute to this braveheart Rauf Ahmad Dar. He saved the tourists from his capsized raft but lost his own life in the process. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannat,” Abdullah tweeted.
