Kashmir shuts down against minor’s rape

Kashmir on Monday observed a complete shutdown against the rape of a three year old girl in Sumbal area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Protests were held across the  valley leading to injuries to several people.

At several places, the police used tear gas to disperse the protesters who had blocked the traffic along the highways to demand speedy trial of the case.

The incident happened on the evening of May 8, when the minor girl was lured to a nearby school by her neighbour. The local people said that the girl was raped by the accused person in a washroom.

The news about the incident triggered instant protests in the area and later spread to other parts of the Valley. People blocked traffic at several places and threw stones at the police. The protesters  also sought stern action against the school principal who had allegedly issued a minor certificate to the accused.

The incident has been condemned by the mainstream and the separatist leadership and they have demanded speedy trial in the incident and exemplary punishment to the culprit.
