Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers will meet in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session next week, the government said today.
“I can confirm that on the request of the Pakistani side, a meeting between EAM Sushma Swaraj & Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi will take place on the sidelines of UNGA at a mutually convenient date and time,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.
“It is a meeting, the agenda is not finalized,” Kumar added.
This will be the first ministerial-level engagement between India and Pakistan under the new Imran Khan-led government.
The move comes after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan.
In the letter, Imran Khan called for a meeting between Foreign Ministers of both the countries – Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mehmood Qureshi, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meet.
