Home Ministry allows reopening of neighbourhood shops, malls to remain closed

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a late-night order allowed reopening of shops registered under the Shops and Establishment Act with some exception.

All shops registered under Shops & Establishment Act of respective States and UTs will be allowed to reopen, however, shopping malls will continue to remain closed.

According to the order, the shops, including those in residential and market complexes, will be allowed to open.

Shops in market complexes, except those within the limits of municipal corporations and municipalities, would be allowed to open. Shops in single and multi-brand malls would not be allowed to open anywhere, according to order.

The relaxations, however, will not be applicable in hotspot/containment zones.

The shops will be allowed to open, but at a 50 per cent strength of workers and after taking necessary precautions.

“All shops registered under the Shops and Establishment Act of the respective State/Union Territory, including shops in residential complexes and market complexes, except shops in multi-brand and single-brand malls, outside the limits of municipal corporations and municipalities, with 50 per cent strength of workers with wearing of masks and social distancing being mandatory,” according to MHA order.

The order further said, “All shops, including neighbourhood shops and standalone shops, shops in residential complexes, within the limits of municipal corporations and municipalities, registered under the Shops and Establishment Act of the respective State and Union Territory, except shops in market complexes and multi-brand and single-brand malls, with 50 per cent strength of workers with wearing of masks and social distancing being mandatory.”
