The Haryana Government has come out with a major action plan to address waterlogging. For the first time, camera-based inspections have ensured de-silting of drains.
Water harvesting wells have been installed at most of the 99 identified waterlogging points , recharging approximately 13,000 metric liters of rainwater.
A new drain has been constructed on the Jaipur-Delhi Highway at Hero Honda Chowk. Encroachments at Legs 1, 2, and 3 have been removed and cleaned, and Leg 4 has been made operational. The State Government claims that this has resolved the waterlogging problem in Gurugram.
Check dams have been constructed at the foothills of the Aravalli hills to block water flowing directly from the hills. The green belt above the road has also been lowered , reducing water on the road. 74 old ponds and water bodies have been restored.
A new rainwater harvesting project has been initiated in collaboration with IIT Delhi , recharging groundwater. Under this initiative, 100 such structures will be installed before the next monsoon season , allowing 250 to 300 million liters of water to be recharged into the groundwater during the monsoon season. He expressed confidence that the situation will see further improvement by the next monsoon season.
Responding to a question about waterlogging in Gurugram, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini stated that the government has been working tirelessly to improve Gurugram for the past 12 years. He added that climate change is causing sudden excessive rainfall.
This year, Gurugram has received more rainfall than normal. Gurugram has received the second-highest rainfall in the state after Yamunanagar. Gurugram received approximately 230 mm of rainfall on August 6, 7, and 8, yet the drainage system continued to function effectively. On August 24, extremely intense rainfall in a short period of time caused waterlogging in some areas , but due to improved drainage systems, the situation returned to normal within approximately two hours.
