Incessant rains trigger flood fears in Valley

Incessant heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir over the last four days has caused flash floods and landslides. The strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked due to landslides leading to the stranding of hundreds of vehicles.

The developing situation has forced the authorities to close schools in the Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts. Similarly, schools have also been shut in Baramulla district.

Heavy rains have led to a rise in the level of most water bodies in Kashmir with the Jhelum river crossing the flood alarm mark at Sangam in Anantnag district on Wednesday, officials said here.

The authorities have started moving people from low-lying areas to safer locations.

The continuing rains and the snowfall in higher reaches including the cave shrine of Amarnath has brought down the day temperature substantially.
