Senior IAS officer Subhash Chandra Garg on Thursday applied for voluntary retirement from service, a day after he was transferred from finance secretary post to the Power Ministry, sources said.
He was expected to formally take over as power secretary later in the evening, sources added.
Garg was the senior-most bureaucrat in the Finance Ministry, in charge of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), and was designated as the finance secretary.
However, the 1983 batch IAS officer was named as Power Secretary and his tenure at the finance ministry was cut short in an order issued late on Wednesday.
The Power Ministry is considered to be of a lower profile than the Ministry of Finance.
Garg was replaced by Atanu Chakraborty in a major bureaucratic reshuffle.
Chakraborty, a Gujarat cadre officer of the 1985 batch was a secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).
