Facebook executives skip Delhi Assembly panel hearing

Facebook executives on Tuesday skipped a hearing of the Delhi Assembly’s “Peace and Harmony” committee saying they have already attended a hearing called by a parliamentary panel.

The response did not go down well with the committee, headed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Raghav Chaddha, and the panel said that it would deliver “a final notice” to the US-based company over the no-show.

“We had summoned Facebook India VP & MD Ajit Mohan over its role in Delhi riots. In reply, Facebook has asked to withdraw summon as ‘regulation of intermediaries like Facebook falls within exclusive authority of GOI,” Raghav Chadha said.

He further said, “Facebook’s letter is in disregard of committee’s privilege. Facebook’s refusal to appear before the committee is an attempt to conceal crucial facts in relation to its role in Delhi riots. Fresh summons will be issued to it in line with principles of natural justice.”

The committee had last week, issued a notice to Facebook India vice president and managing director Ajit Mohan asking him to appear before it on September 15 in connection with complaints about the social media platform’s alleged deliberate and intentional inaction to curb hateful content in the country.
