Nirbhaya case: President Kovind rejects mercy plea of death row convict Vinay Sharma

President Ram Nath Kovind has rejected the mercy petition of Vinay Sharma, one of the four death row convicts in Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case.

Vinay Sharma had filed his mercy petition before President Kovind on Wednesday.

With the rejection of this mercy plea, there are no petitions pending in the President’s office in the case.

All four convicts- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Kumar Gupta and Mukesh Singh were scheduled to be hanged today, but a Delhi court indefinitely postponed the execution on Friday.

No new date for the execution of all four men has been issued yet.

The original date of execution was January 22 but due to mercy petition filed by Mukesh Singh, a Delhi court set a new date.

All four men were convicted and sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old paramedic student in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012.

She passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while undergoing the treatment.
