DMK MLA J Anbazhagan who had tested positive for COVID-19 passed away on Wednesday morning in Chennai hospital. He was 61.
He breathed his last at Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre in the city.
Anbazhagan was admitted to hospital on June 2 over “severe acute respiratory distress”. He tested positive for COVID-19 and was put on ventilator support on June 3 when his breathing trouble worsened.
He is the first legislator to die of coronavirus in Tamil Nadu.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami expressed his grief over the death of Anbazhagan.
Tamil Nadu is the second-worst affected state in the country after Maharashtra with 34,914 Covid-19 cases and 307 deaths. The state has 16,282 active cases while 18,325 have been cured/discharged, the Health Ministry said.
