Coronavirus death toll jumps past 700 in China

The number of deaths from China’s new coronavirus epidemic has risen to 722 on Saturday.

There are now more than 34,500 confirmed infections across China, sources said.

Chinese doctor Li Wenliang, who was among the first to alert other medics of the new coronavirus outbreak died of the epidemic on Thursday.

34-year-old Wenliang, an ophthalmologist in Wuhan started observing that patients had symptoms similar to the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak of 2002-03.

He later got infected by virus while treating a patient.

The virus has spread to many countries, prompting several governments to ban arrivals from China and urge their citizens to avoid travelling to the country.

Major airlines have suspended flights to and from China.
