Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday strongly disapproved party leader CP Joshi’s reported statement and stepped in with a clarification and a rebuke for Joshi over his comment that “only Brahmins know and can talk about Hinduism”.
“CP Joshi’s statement is against the Congress party’s principles. No party leader should make statements that hurt any section of the society,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
Asking Joshi to apologise on his statement, the Congress president added: “I am sure Joshiji has realized his mistake in view of the Congress’s beliefs and workers’ sentiment.”
Joshi apologised and felt sorry if his comments had hurt any section of the society.
Joshi tweeted, “In respect of the principles and feelings of the Congress, I apologise if my comments hurt any section of the society.”
Rahul Gandhi’s remarks came after a video of Joshi surfaced on Thursday in which Joshi while addressing a gathering at Sema village in Rajsamand district of poll-bound Rajasthan had said,“Uma Bharti, who belongs to the Lodi samaj, is talking about Hindu religion. Narendra Modi too belongs to some other religion and talks about Hinduism.” It’s only Brahmins who don’t talk about it.
He was heard saying that only pandits and brahmins knew about Hinduism and were learned enough to speak about it.
