New Delhi: Speculation over a major reshuffle and expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Council of Ministers has intensified, with political circles abuzz over possible changes in the Union Cabinet ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. However, sources indicate that the exercise may now take place after the Monsoon Session, likely in September or October, as the government’s immediate focus remains on key legislative business.
According to sources, Prime Minister Modi is expected to review the performance of ministers, regional representation and political requirements before finalising any changes. The reshuffle is likely to include a combination of fresh inductions, portfolio reallocations and possible exits of some ministers. Younger leaders could also be given greater responsibilities in both the government and the BJP organisation.
The speculation gained momentum following the resignation of Union Minister George Kurian and a series of high-level meetings held by the BJP leadership. Reports suggest that the cabinet exercise could coincide with the announcement of a new BJP organisational team under party president Nitin Nabin.
While several names are doing the rounds in political circles regarding possible inductions and portfolio changes, there has been no official confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Office or the BJP. Reports have also suggested that factors such as caste equations, state representation and upcoming Assembly elections may play a key role in shaping the final contours of the reshuffle.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament is expected to begin around July 20, and the government is currently focused on ensuring the smooth passage of crucial legislation. Sources maintain that the timing of any cabinet reshuffle will ultimately depend on the Prime Minister’s schedule and broader political considerations.
