The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) started in 2016 with the
aim of providing financial support to farmers suffering from crop failure has
instead mostly benefitted insurance companies -- 13 of these in private sector
and 5 in the public sector — to the tune of thousands of crores of rupees,
