A 30-year-old man was killed and three Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel were injured during a firing incident in the Bhaderwah area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district late on Thursday night, officials said, according to a report from Srinagar.
The incident took place along the Jaie-Gandoh road, around 35 km from Bhaderwah town, where an SOG team had laid an ambush following reports of suspicious movement in the high-altitude area.
According to officials, the SOG personnel intercepted a youth who allegedly attacked the team and attempted to snatch a service rifle. During the ensuing scuffle, a police personnel opened fire, leaving the youth with bullet injuries. Three SOG personnel were also injured in the confrontation.
The injured were taken to the Sub-District Hospital in Bhaderwah and later referred to the Government Medical College in Doda for specialised treatment. The injured man, identified as Aarif Hussain, a resident of Cheeka village, later succumbed to his injuries.
Police have detained a religious preacher in connection with the incident, though officials said his exact role, if any, is yet to be established.
Security has been tightened in Bhaderwah town with additional deployments of police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel. The Army has also launched a search operation in the Jaie area.
