Vijay Mallya on June 26 released a two-year-old letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said in a statement saying “He will continue to make every effort to settle with the public sector banks (PSBs)” adding that the bulk of the claims made by the Public Sector Banks were on account of interest and that he was being made a “Poster Boy” of bank default and a “lightning rod of public anger”.

“I wrote letters to both the prime minister and the finance minister on 15th April 2016 and am making these letters public to put things in the right perspective. No response was received from either of them,” said Mallya.

He said that he has been accused by politicians and the press alike of having stolen and run away with Rs. 9,000 crores that was loaned to Kingfisher Airlines. Some of the lending Banks have also labeled me a willful defaulter.

Mallya’s statement read “He requested court permission to allow the selling of the assets under judicial supervision and repay creditors, including PSBs.”

Mallya’s statement comes in wake of application which was filed last week by the Enforcement Directorate before a special court in Mumbai. The application seeks to declare Mallya, a ‘fugitive economic offender’ under the recently promulgated Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, 2018.
