Who is Monika Kapoor-‘economic offender’ CBI is bringing from US

A CBI team has taken custody of alleged economic offender Monika Kapoor in the US and is bringing her back to India tonight, July 9, according to agency reports.

A fugitive for 26 years, Kapoor is being brought  back following her extradition cleared by the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York under the bilateral extradition treaty between India and the USA. The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also orejected her claims that she would be tortured if sent back to India

Who is Monika Kapoor

Kapoor is accused of involvement in a multi-crore financial fraud case related to forging documents for a jewellery business to obtain duty-free import licenses and causing significant loss to the Indian exchequer. 

According to reports, Kapoor went to the US in 1999, fleeing after her involvement in the alleged fraud with her two brothers. She forged documents for jewellery business and allegedly used these to obtain licenses from the Indian government to import raw materials duty free.

India had approached the US seeking her extradition in October 2010.
