West Bengal Cabinet Expansion: 35 BJP MLAs Sworn In Under CM Suvendu Adhikari

1 June, 2026 Kolkata : In a major development, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expanded his cabinet on June 1, 2026, by inducting 35 BJP MLAs as ministers. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan in Kolkata, with Governor RN Ravi administering the oath of office.
This expansion brings the total strength of the West Bengal cabinet to 41, including the Chief Minister. As per constitutional provisions, the state can have a maximum of 44 ministers.
The newly inducted ministers include prominent leaders such as Arjun Singh, Tapas Roy, Shankar Ghosh, Swapan Dasgupta, Manoj Kumar Oraon, and Gouri Shankar Ghosh. Three MLAs — Rajesh Mahata, Indranil Khan, and Malati Rava Roy — were sworn in as Ministers of State with independent charge.
The full list features winners from the 2026 Assembly elections who defeated TMC candidates with significant margins in constituencies like Siliguri, Falakata, Kumargram, and others.
This move comes nearly a month after Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 9 in a grand ceremony attended by top BJP leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The cabinet expansion is being seen as an effort to strengthen administrative efficiency and reward strong performers from the recent elections. With BJP now firmly in power in the state, the new ministers are expected to focus on key governance priorities including development, law and order, and welfare schemes.
Political observers believe this large-scale induction will help the government implement its agenda more effectively across various departments in the coming months.
