New Delhi: Messages warning people about so-called “pen bombs” have been circulating widely on social media, with claims that pen-shaped explosive devices have been found in different parts of the country, particularly in Gujarat. The viral posts have triggered concern among the public, but a review of available reports and official information suggests that several claims remain unverified.
The rumours gained momentum after social media users began sharing photographs and videos alleging that explosive devices disguised as pens were being left in public places. Many of these posts claimed that such incidents had already occurred in Gujarat and urged people not to pick up unfamiliar objects from roadsides or public spaces.
However, despite the widespread circulation of these claims, no confirmed police record or officially verified report of a “pen bomb” explosion in Gujarat could be independently established at the time of publishing. Several fact-check reports have also pointed out that some of the images being shared online are either old, unrelated or show novelty pen-shaped objects rather than explosive devices.
Adding to the discussion, reports emerged that Bulandshahr Police in Uttar Pradesh had issued an advisory asking people to stay away from suspicious pen-like objects. While screenshots and copies of such advisories are being widely shared on social media and local news platforms, the advisory could not be independently verified through the official websites or publicly accessible digital platforms of Uttar Pradesh Police or Bulandshahr Police at the time of writing.
As a result, both the alleged Gujarat incidents and the reported Bulandshahr advisory remain subjects that require further official clarification.
Regardless of whether the viral claims ultimately prove true or false, safety experts say one basic rule should always be followed: people should avoid touching any unattended or suspicious object found in public places and immediately inform local authorities. Whether it is a pen, bag, box or any unfamiliar item, exercising caution is always the safest course of action.
