The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday cleared the proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh Minister Siddharth Nath Singh said in Lucknow after the Cabinet meeting.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s announcement of changing the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj, amid protests by the Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party.
Meanwhile, people from the society including intellectuals, teachers, literary persons, lawyers and politicians had given mixed reactions to the move to rename Allahabad, also known as the Sangam city.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanth, during his visit to Allahabad on Saturday had announced that there was a proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj ahead of the 2019 Kumbh Mela.
The Congress party had said that Allahabad had played a key role in the country’s freedom struggle and renaming it would diminish its importance.
Moreover, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said that the Yogi Adityanath’s government wanted to exhibit its work only by “renaming”.
