Uttar Pradesh government allowed Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and three others to visit Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the members of families of victims where nine leaders including four farmers were killed.
Internet services has been suspended and security has been tightened along Sitapur Lakhimpur highway to prevent any violence in the district.
Earlier on Monday, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who was going to Lakhimpur, was detained by the police on the way. Police said on Tuesday that he had been arrested on charges of breach of the peace.
A delegation of Rahul Gandhi, Chattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Punjab’s Chief Minister Charanjit Channi boarded a flight to Lucknow from Delhi this afternoon.
In a press briefing Rahul Gandhi said, “I want to go there and understand what the ground reality is because no one knows about the ground reality yet; so we are going to Lucknow today.”
However, 8 people, including 4 farmers, were killed in the violence in Lakhimpur on Sunday, after which the leaders of the opposition party are trying to go there.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is lodged at the PAC guest house in Sitapur, has said that she has been ‘illegally kept in custody’.
