New Delhi: Indian Railways is set to roll out a major upgrade to its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) from August, replacing a reservation platform that has been in use for nearly four decades. The move is aimed at making ticket booking faster, smoother and more reliable for millions of passengers across the country.
According to the Railways Ministry, trains will be gradually shifted to the upgraded reservation system beginning in August. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed officials to ensure that the transition from the existing 40-year-old system takes place without causing any inconvenience to passengers.
One of the biggest highlights of the new platform is its enhanced booking capacity and the use of artificial intelligence to improve passenger services. The upgraded system will offer AI-powered waitlist confirmation predictions, helping passengers better understand their chances of getting a confirmed ticket before travel.
Railway officials say the new technology will significantly improve system performance during peak booking periods, when heavy traffic often slows down ticket reservations. The platform is also expected to provide a more user-friendly experience and reduce technical glitches that passengers sometimes face during online bookings.
The AI-based confirmation prediction feature has already shown encouraging results. According to the Railways, prediction accuracy has improved from around 53% to nearly 94%, offering passengers more reliable information while planning their journeys.
The modernization is part of Indian Railways’ broader digital transformation strategy aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and passenger convenience. With nearly 88% of railway tickets now being booked online, officials believe the upgraded reservation system will be better equipped to handle growing demand and provide a smoother travel experience for millions of users.
