Three publishers have been arrested in connection with the investigation into two controversial books found in government school libraries in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Sunday.
The arrests were made by the counter-intelligence unit in Jammu following operations in Jammu and Delhi. Officials said the investigation is focused on the publication and distribution of books containing “highly inappropriate content.”
The three arrested are Inderpaul of Oberoi Book Service and Amardeep Singh and Girish Arora of Noida-based Dominant Publishers.
The case relates to two books that allegedly “glorify separatist leaders.” An FIR was registered on July 4 under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Officials said investigations are ongoing and further arrests are likely.
On Saturday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha suspended eight School Education Department officials, terminated a contractual employee, and ordered an inquiry into the two books, saying they contained “highly inappropriate content.” The School Education Department had withdrawn both books on July 3.
