Three-member committee to probe Justice Verma case

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday announced the constitution of a three-member committee to investigate the corruption allegations against Justice Yashwant Verma in the backdrop of burnt cash recovered from his residence in Delhi.

The committee was formed after the Speaker received a resolution signed by members of ruling and Opposition parties seeking his removal.

Birla informed Lok Sabha that the committee will comprise Justice Aravind Kumar, Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court; and B V Acharya, a Senior Advocate at the Karnataka High Court who will present the report as soon as possible.

“In accordance with sub-section 2 of section 3 of the Judges (Judges) Act, 1968, I have constituted a committee consisting of the following 3 members to examine the grounds of request for removal of Justice Yashwant Verma from the post,” Birla said.

The Supreme Court of India had initiated a three-member in-house inquiry into allegations surrounding the discovery of sacks of burnt cash in a storeroom at the official residence of Justice Yashwant Verma, a senior Delhi High Court judge, after a fire broke out on March 14, 2025.

This inquiry had led to his repatriation to the Allahabad High Court, sparking protests and an indefinite strike by Allahabad lawyers. Justice Verma was in Bhopal when the fire broke out, while his daughter and his elderly mother were at home. Justice Verma has denied any knowledge of the cash, suggesting it may be part of a deep conspiracy against him.
