Tempo driver, Delhi cops clash: Protests outside Mukherjee Nagar police station

A large number of people, mainly from the Sikh community, gathered outside the Mukherjee Nagar police station on Monday night against the thrashing of a tempo driver in Mukherjee Nagar by Delhi Police personnel. They demanded sacking of all policemen who were involved in the incident, police said.

A brawl between the tempo driver, and policemen took an ugly turn on Monday after videos went viral on social media.

In one of the purported videos, the tempo driver was seen chasing the policemen with a sword in his hand. In another video, policemen were seen thrashing the driver while overpowering him.

Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP MLA, Manjinder Singh Sirsa had said, “We had an elaborate meeting with @CPDelhi in which the tempo driver S. Sarabjit Singh was also present. Commissioner Patnaik Ji gave us a patient hearing and agreed that Law is equal for all, be it a uniformed police official or a civilian.”

“@CPDelhi has assured us that strictest action will be taken against all police officers under relevant Sections of IPC. He made Sarabjit Singh write a complaint against erring police officers visible in video who will be held accountable & not just the three who are suspended,” he added.

He further said, “.@CPDelhi told us that a Joint Comm of Police Northern Range would be enquiring this case & add any other Sections also if needed. The case will be tried outside district. This is a fight of Sarabjit Singh & DSGMC stands in solidarity with him. He is satisfied after this meeting.”.

On Monday, Delhi Police filed a cross FIR in the case and suspended three police officers, including two Assistant sub-Inspector and a constable.

Security has been increased in Mukherjee Nagar area, where the incident happened, as the situation remained tensed.
