New Delhi/Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has resigned from the party as well as the Upper House of Parliament, dealing another setback to Mamata Banerjee’s party amid an ongoing internal crisis. Her departure comes at a time when the TMC is already facing rebellion and dissent within its parliamentary ranks.
Confirming her decision, Sushmita Dev said she did not want to be “in two boats at the same time,” indicating that she had made a clear political choice. However, she has not publicly disclosed her next move or whether she intends to join another political party.
Dev’s resignation marks the second exit of a TMC Rajya Sabha MP within a week, adding to concerns about instability within the party. Her departure comes amid reports of a growing revolt by a section of TMC MPs and leaders who have expressed dissatisfaction with the party leadership and organizational functioning.
The development has triggered speculation after visuals emerged showing Sushmita Dev meeting Himanta Biswa Sarma, fueling discussions about possible political realignments. Neither Dev nor the BJP has officially commented on any future association.
Sushmita Dev joined the TMC in 2021 after leaving the Congress and was later elected to the Rajya Sabha by the party. Since then, she had become one of the prominent faces of the Trinamool Congress, particularly in the Northeast.
Her resignation comes as the TMC grapples with one of its most challenging phases in recent years, marked by internal dissent, rebel factions and leadership challenges. Political observers believe the latest exit could further intensify pressure on the party leadership as it attempts to contain the growing crisis.
