Supreme Court directs Allahabad High Court to monitor CBI probe in Hathras case

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Allahabad High Court to monitor the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in the alleged gang-rape and death of a girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde said that all aspects of the Hathras case will be monitored by the Allahabad High Court. The bench also observed that once the investigation by the CBI concludes, the transfer of the trial in the case from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi can be considered.

The bench also directed the CBI to file its status reports in Allahabad High Court.

The 19-year-old woman died after she was allegedly gang-raped by four men of her village. All four accused have been arrested. The incident prompted outrage, protests and calls for justice.
