Sunil Arora took charge as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India on Sunday. He was appointed as CEC by President Ram Nath Kovind. He replaced CEC OP Rawat, who demitted office on Saturday.
Arora will oversee the 2019 general election. Apart from the Lok Sabha elections, he will also be responsible for the assembly elections in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim that are scheduled to be held in 2019.
Arora, a former secretary in the ministry of information and broadcasting, has also served as the secretary in the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship.
A 1980 batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Arora has worked in ministries and departments such as Textiles, Finance and Planning Commission. He had also served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
