SPG cover for Gandhis’ withdrawn

The Centre has decided to withdraw Special Protection Group (SPG) security cover from Gandhi family and now they will be accorded Z+ security.

The Gandhis will be guarded by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

According to the sources, the decision was taken on the recommendation of a top security review panel that carries out a threat perception assessment and found there was no direct threat to them.

Recently, the government had downgraded the security cover of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from SPG to Z+.

However, the Congress has slammed the move by Narendra Modi-led BJP government and called it personal vendetta.

Congress leader Ahmed Patel said in a tweet, “The BJP has descended to the ultimate personal vendetta mechanism, compromising the lives of family members of 2 Former Prime Ministers to acts of terror and violence.”

The SPG was formed in 1985, a year after Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguards.
