Thousands of Shia mourners take part in a Muharram procession in Srinagar.

A large number of Shia Muslims gathered in Srinagar on Wednesday to take part in the 8th Muharram procession, marking a significant moment of mourning during the Islamic month of Muharram.
The procession moved through designated routes in the city, with participants observing the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala. Mourners expressed grief by chest-beating as part of traditional rituals associated with the occasion.
The event, marked by solemnity, also saw participation from people of different backgrounds. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed in India through prayers, fasting, and charity.
Security and civic arrangements were put in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the procession. District Police personnel also distributed water and refreshments to the participants.
Srinagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) GV Sundeep Chakravarthy said arrangements were in place for the peaceful conclusion of the event.
He said, “The procession completes at the Imambara in the evening. The Srinagar district police, are working with the traffic police, and civic administration to ensure the peaceful and dignified completion of the event… We appeal to the public to follow traffic advisories and cooperate with authorities for a successful procession,” he told reporters.
Authorities said the procession is expected to conclude at the Imambara later in the evening.
Muharram holds deep religious significance for Shia Muslims, with the 10th day—Ashura—marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain Ibn Ali and his companions in 680 CE at Karbala. The day is observed as a period of mourning by Shia Muslims, while Sunni Muslims observe fasting.
