Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised the centre for targeting National Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, a month before elections in Maharashtra.
“Sharad Pawar Ji is the latest Opposition leader to be targeted by a vindictive Government. The timing of this action, a month before elections in Maharashtra, reeks of political opportunism,” Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.
Pawar will appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday afternoon in connection with a scam at the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank.
NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “Honourable Sharad Pawar will visit ED office today. A large number of workers will be present in his support. However, the police have started detaining workers since last night. We are law-abiding people. This suppression is not right. Condemnation!”
NCP workers had staged protests in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra when Pawar was named in a money laundering case earlier this week.
Police have imposed prohibitory orders outside the ED’s office ahead of Pawar’s visit to the agency office today.
