Seven die in car accident at Old Pune-Mumbai Highway

Seven people died and three critically injured after two cars collided with each other on the Old Pune-Mumbai Highway near Lonavala on Sunday.

The collision happened between a swift car, coming from pune to Lonawala and a Santro car, coming from lonavala to Pune.

According to the police sources, the driver of swift who was heading towards lonawala, lost control and rammed into the road driver, the impact was so strong that the car jumped over the other side of road and rammed into the santro which was on its way to pune from lonavala.

All the four family members in santro car and three youths in swift car died on the spot.

The injured were rushed to the hospital in an ambulance by the emergency response team.

The four deceased from the family have been identified as Rajiv Jagannath Bahirat (52), his wife Sonali (46), daughter Janhvi (20) and Rajiv’s father Jagannath Bahirat (83). The other three deceased were Sanjiv Mohan Kushwah (17), Krishna Ramesh Shirkat (22) and Nikhil Balaji Sarode (20).

The three injured people have been identified as Nikhil’s brother Pratik Sarode (18), Akash Madne (17), Rohit Kad (16).

However, their condition seems to be critical but they are being treated for multiple injuries, police said.

The collision took place at Karla Phata near Lonavala. The accident led to major traffic jams on both the sides of the highway for over two hours.
