Security forces have intensified vigil across Jammu and Kashmir in the run-up to the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, in which 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, were killed after terrorists reportedly identified victims based on their religious identity.

The security grid has been reinforced along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC), amid intelligence inputs suggesting attempts by handlers based in Pakistan to infiltrate small groups of heavily armed militants into Indian territory to carry out surprise attacks.

On Monday, a joint team of security forces launched search operations in border areas of Rajbagh and Ramkote in Kathua district following reports of suspicious movement.

In Rajouri, General Officer Commanding of the Ace of Spades Division, Major General Kaushik Mukherji, said the Army remains on high alert in Rajouri and Poonch districts.

“I assure you that our army is fully alert at the borders and is ready to give a befitting response to every hostile act of the enemy.”

Search operations are also underway for the second consecutive day in the SIDCO forest area of Samba district, where two suspected individuals were spotted moving under the cover of darkness.

With the onset of the spring season and a rise in tourist arrivals, authorities have conducted a fresh security audit and deployed additional personnel at key tourist destinations to reassure visitors.

Popular locations such as the Tulip Garden in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Tangmarg, Gurez Valley and Bandipora are witnessing increased footfall during the peak tourist season. The Jammu region is also seeing a surge in pilgrims visiting Katra in Reasi district for the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, along with nearby destinations like Patnitop and Bhaderwah.

Tourist sites that were temporarily shut following the attack have now been reopened after enhanced security arrangements.

In recent weeks, the Union Home Ministry has reviewed the security situation in the Union Territory and initiated measures aimed at dismantling the terror ecosystem.

Addressing a gathering at the ‘Rajouri Day’ event, Major General Mukherji highlighted the role of civilians in maintaining security.

“When the Army protects the borders, the local population stands shoulder to shoulder with the forces, strengthening internal security. This trust, partnership, and sense of patriotism constitute the greatest strengths of our region,” he said.
