The Supreme Court on Thursday appointed a three-member inquiry commission headed by former top court judge VS Sirpurkar to inquire into the circumstances leading to the encounter of the four accused in the rape and murder of a veterinarian in Telangana.
The panel also includes Justice Rekha Baldota, a former Bombay High Court judge and former CBI director DR Karthikeyan.
The panel will submit a report to the Supreme Court in 6 months.
During the course of hearing, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing the Telangana government told the bench that the accused attempting to escape from the custody attacked the policemen with stones, and the policemen fired in retaliation.
The bench also took into account the submission made by Rohatgi that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was also investigating into the incident and would submit its report.
On December 6, all four men accused in the rape and murder of the 26-year-old veterinarian in Telangana were killed in an encounter with police.
The accused were taken to the crime scene for recreation of the incident. However, all four men allegedly tried to escape following which police opened fire, sources said.
