SC directs CBI to take over probe of sexual abuse cases of 16 shelter homes in Bihar

The Supreme Court on November 28 has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe into allegations of physical and sexual abuse of inmates at 16 shelter homes in Bihar in addition to the Muzaffarpur shelter home case which is already with CBI.

An SC bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur transferred the probe, being conducted by Bihar police, to the CBI while dismissing the state government’s request to not transfer the probe.

During the hearing, Justice Deepak Gupta said, “Every time I read this file (relating to the case), I find it tragic.”

The top court asks CBI to must look into the grave concerns being raised in the report of Tata Institute of Social Sciences about 17 shelter homes in Bihar.

The top court also added that CBI officers investigating the shelter home cases shall not be transferred without its prior permission.

Meanwhile, CBI told the SC bench, that in principle, it was ready to take over the probe and expected to file a charge sheet by December 7.
