The Supreme Court on Monday refused to extend the security of retired judge SK Yadav, who had recently pronounced the verdict in the sensitive Babri Masjid demolition case and acquitted all 32 accused, including BJP veterans L K Advani and Uma Bharti.
A bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice RF Nariman was considering the former judge’s request seeking an extension of his personal security in view of the sensitivity of the case decided by him recently.
“Having perused the letter dated September 30, 2020, we do not consider it appropriate to continue providing the security,” the bench said.
The bench was also comprising Justices Navin Sinha and Krishna Murari.
The special CBI court, had on September 30, acquitted all 32 accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case observing that the demolition was not pre-planned.
The Babri Masjid was demolished in December 1992 by “kar sevaks” who claimed that the mosque in Ayodhya was built on the site of an ancient Ram temple. The land dispute over the site was settled last year by the Supreme Court, which allowed the construction of a Ram temple. The court also directed that an alternative site should be allotted in Ayodhya for the construction of a mosque.
