In a daring daylight attack, prominent RTI activist Simranjeet Singh was gunned down by two motorcycle-borne youths. The incident occurred directly outside the law gate of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Chaheru village. Singh died on the spot.
According to initial reports, the attackers closed in on Singh on Saturday afternoon and opened fire at close range. Police teams have reportedly recovered a .32 bore pistol from the crime scene. A .12 bore rifle was also found inside a Fortuner parked near the site of the shooting.
Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla confirmed that multiple police units, including Counter Intelligence teams, have been deployed to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
This was not the first attempt on Singh’s life. Exactly one year ago, he narrowly escaped an ambush by armed assailants outside a gym in the Model Town area of Jalandhar. The Jalandhar-based activist had previously survived an attempt on his life and was moving without his assigned police security at the time of the ambush.
Following that incident, the Jalandhar City police had assigned him two armed gunmen for his protection. However, sources report that Singh was traveling without his security detail when Saturday’s fatal attack took place.
For over a decade, Simranjeet Singh was a relentless crusader, filing numerous petitions and complaints with the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjab Police, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
