Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting\u00a0 Anurag Thakur has said that Cinema, as a soft power can play a major role in nation branding initiative.\u00a0 Addressing the valedictory session of the two-day Seminar in Mumbai through video message, Thakur said \u201cIndian film industry\u00a0 and the Government\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>today recognizethe\u00a0 potential of culture at the highest level. Depiction of one\u2019s culture is a very strong component -of any country\u2019s soft power\u201d<\/p>\n

Union Minister further said that the capacities of nation to make themselves attractive in a global market place for ideas has become an important\u00a0 aspect of contemporary international relations. \u201cCinema can play\u00a0 a major role in doing this by aiming for nation branding initiatives\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Minister observed that rapid liberalization, de regulation, privatization of media and culture industry have transformed the film industry in India over the past few decades, and at the same time the expansion of global digital media industries, and distribution technologies have ensured that Indian entertainment channels and films are increasingly visible in the global media space.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the growing popularity of Indian Cinema on the world map Thakur said \u201ctoday Hindi films are released simultaneously across the globe and its stars are recognized faces in international advertising and entertainment space.\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cEven the far flung African countries are fascinated by our movies and music. We know about countries like Nigeria where the Nollywood market takes a lot of inspiration from Indian Cinema; Bollywood has also expanded in unchartered countries like Latin America; our cinema is making inroads into counties like South Korea, Japan, China\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Union Minister also stressed the role being played by Indian language cinema. \u201cIt is not just the Hindi movies, but also the films in Indian languages that are getting vast audience nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the role of film industry in aiding public diplomacy the Minister said that globalization of our popular cinema aided by large diaspora can help in promoting India\u2019s public diplomacy. \u201cWe need to promote a Public \u2013Private Partnership to brand India using the power of our film fraternity and the power of India to create the content and become the content sub-continent of the world\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Need to institutionalize subtitling in foreign languages : Vinay Sahasrabuddhe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering, ICCR President Vinay Sahasrabuddhe said, more than 95 participants from various parts of the country participated in the seminar which discussed the idea of Indian Cinema and its Soft power probably for the first time.<\/p>\n

To enhance the reach of Indian films across the world, Sahasrabuddhe advocated for institutional arrangements for subtitling Indian films in a number of foreign languages, particularly in the languages of countries where India\u2019s cultural influence is strong viz Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan etc. Sahasrabuddhe informed that ICCR will \u00a0organize a national seminar on Foreign Languages Training in India and Soft Power.<\/p>\n

The ICCR President also \u00a0said that we can pitch our Language Cinema to the NRIs, who are nostalgic about their culture that they left behind.\u00a0 He said \u2018A category such as \u2018Soft Power Promotion Friendly Films\u2019 could be introduced in Film Awards. \u2018Those films that show a comprehensive and correct understanding about India could be awarded under the category\u2019, he added.<\/p>\n

About the symposium<\/strong><\/p>\n

Around 95 participants from various parts of the country participated in the Seminar organized by the ICCR and FLAME University, Pune.\u00a0 The aim of the seminar was to bring together practitioners and scholars of Indian cinema and international relations to deliberate, discuss and dwell upon the pertinent discourse in contemporary times.<\/p>\n

Renowned film director Shekhar Kapoor had inaugurated the seminar yesterday.\u00a0Eminent film personalities and renowned experts like Subhash Ghai, Roopa Ganguly, Bharat Bala, Ambarish Mishra, Arunaraje Patil, Ashok Rane, Meenakshi Shedde, Manoj Muntashir, Paresh Rawal, and G P Vijay Kumar chaired various technical sessions.<\/p>\n
