{"id":335569,"date":"2022-02-01T12:03:38","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T17:33:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=335569"},"modified":"2022-02-02T06:44:41","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T12:14:41","slug":"politics-over-merger-of-the-eternal-flames","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/politics-over-merger-of-the-eternal-flames\/","title":{"rendered":"Politics over merger of\u00a0 the Eternal Flames"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-335570\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/DSC_0841-696x461.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2022\/02\/DSC_0841-696x461.jpg 696w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2022\/02\/DSC_0841-696x461-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2022\/02\/DSC_0841-696x461-634x420.jpg 634w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A needless political controversy has ensued over the merger of Amar Jawan Jyoti\u00a0with the Eternal Flame at the National War Memorial.\u00a0Of course the\u00a0eternal flame at India Gate had become a part of our psyche and generations had grown up saluting the valiant but the\u00a0flame had not been extinguished.\u00a0It found a new befitting abode in the National War Memorial at a\u00a0ceremony presided over by the Integrated Defence Staff chief Air Marshal Balabadhra Radha Krishna.<\/p>\n<p>Till recently, we lacked a National War Memorial and the\u00a0Memorial near India Gate in New Delhi, is a tribute to our soldiers who laid down their lives defending the nation and made the supreme sacrifice in Peace Keeping Missions, and Counter Insurgency Operations.\u00a0 It represents the culmination of the collective aspiration of a grateful nation to the martyrs.\u00a0It is\u00a0nation\u2019s icon for paying tributes to our braves and it\u00a0bears the name of every single soldier who has died in the service of the nation and the flame represents each of those men.<\/p>\n<p>At the India Gate, a British-era monument which was built in 1921 in memory of soldiers who died in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War, the Amar Jawan Jyoti has been burning since January 26, 1972 when the\u00a0flame was lit by the Indira Gandhi government to honour the soldiers who fell in the 1971 war with Pakistan, which ended with the liberation of Bangladesh.
