{"id":328264,"date":"2020-11-02T09:52:19","date_gmt":"2020-11-02T09:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=328264"},"modified":"2020-11-02T09:52:19","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T09:52:19","slug":"sc-stays-election-commissions-order-revoking-kamal-naths-star-campaigner-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/sc-stays-election-commissions-order-revoking-kamal-naths-star-campaigner-status\/","title":{"rendered":"SC stays Election Commission\u2019s order revoking Kamal Nath\u2019s star campaigner status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-321269 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/kamal-nath.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/03\/kamal-nath.jpg 485w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/03\/kamal-nath-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/>The Supreme Court on Monday stayed Election Commission&#8217;s order removing Congress leader Kamal Nath\u2019s star campaigner status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Election Commission on Friday revoked the star campaigner status of Kamal Nath, citing repeated violation of Model Code of Conduct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister had moved the Top Court challenging the poll body&#8217;s decision to revoke his &#8220;star campaigner&#8221; status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">While hearing the matter today, the Apex Court said prima facie EC didn\u2019t have the power\u00a0to remove a candidate from the star campaigner list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Representing the Election Commission, senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi said since the election is due on November 3, the plea is infructuous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In its order on October 30, the Commission had said, \u201cfor repeated violation of Model of Conduct and for \u201ccompletely disregarding\u201d\u00a0the advisories issued to him, the commission revoked Kamal Nath\u2019s star campaigner status.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If any campaign is done by Kamal Nath from now onwards, the entire expenditure related to travel, stay, visit will be borne by the candidate in whose constituency campaign is being undertaken, the Election Commission\u2019s order states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Kamal Nath had earlier been warned by the Election Commission after he used the word \u201citem\u201d for a woman BJP candidate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">While Campaigning, the former CM had mocked BJP\u2019s Imarti Devi, saying the Congress candidate was a simple person unlike his opponent, who was an item.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Commission had advised Kamal Nath that while making public utterances he should not use any such word or statement during the period of Model Code of Conduct.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Monday stayed Election Commission&#8217;s order removing Congress leader Kamal Nath\u2019s star campaigner status.
