{"id":324667,"date":"2020-07-15T04:19:28","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T04:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=324667"},"modified":"2020-07-15T04:19:28","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T04:19:28","slug":"trump-administration-rescinds-foreign-students-visa-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/trump-administration-rescinds-foreign-students-visa-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump administration rescinds foreign students visa policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-321605 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/trump-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"673\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/03\/trump-2.jpg 673w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/03\/trump-2-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/03\/trump-2-100x70.jpg 100w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/03\/trump-2-595x420.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px\" \/>The Trump administration on Tuesday rescinded its July 6 rule that would have required international students to transfer or leave the country if their schools held classes entirely online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The universities of Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with the support of a number of other institutions, had filed series of lawsuits against the move that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on July 6 that it would not allow foreign students attending US colleges to stay in the country if all of their classes are moved online in the fall over the coronavirus crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Judge Allison Burroughs, the federal district judge in Boston, said federal immigration authorities agreed to pull the July 6 directive and \u201creturn to the status quo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The announcement came as a big relief to international students who had been at risk of being deported from the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The controversy began after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said \u201cNonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may\u00a0not\u00a0take a full online course load and remain in the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe US Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and\/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States. Active students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status.
