\"\"<\/a>Airlines\u2019 ticket sales have disappeared and so have the daily cash intake from those sales. The result is the airlines are grounding hundreds of aircrafts, eliminating services and in some cases imposing salary reductions and laying off employees. In desperation, some are shutting down entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airlines face an unprecedented international crisis in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that the global industry will lose US$252 billion in 2020 alone. Many airlines are cutting up to 90 per cent of their flight capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The airline industry has faced many crises before \u2014 9\/11 and the 2010 Icelandic volcano eruption. However, Covid-19 has been the severest of all. Currently, most of the global airline industry is grounded. Experts point out that survival will depend on how countries support these through special bailout packages.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the modern world is weaved on aviation connectivity, any damage to aviation industry is bound to extend into virtually every corner of the economy. The aviation industry directly or indirectly affects not only air transport but tourism and hospitality industry as well. The effect is before anyone to see as viral unconfirmed reports suggest:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Virgin fires more than 3000 people including 600 Pilots<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Finnair returns 12 planes and lays off 2,400 people<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>You grounds 22 planes and fires 4,100 people<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Ryanair grounds 113 planes and gets rid of 900 pilots for the moment, 450 more in the coming months<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Norwegian completely stops its long-haul activity!!! The 787s are returned to the lessors<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>SAS returns 14 planes and fires 520 pilots… The Scandinavian states are studying a plan to liquidate Norwegian and SAS to rebuild a new company from their ashes<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Ethiad cancels 18 orders for A350, grounds 10 A380 and 10 Boeing 787. Lays off 720 staff<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Emirate grounds 38 A380s and cancels all orders for the Boeing 777x (150 aircraft, the largest order for this type). They \u201cinvite\u201d all employees over 56 to retire<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Wizzair returns 32 A320s and lays off 1,200 people, including 200 pilots, another wave of 430 layoffs planned in the coming months.\u00a0 Remaining employees will see their wages reduced by 30%<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>IAG (British Airways\u2019 parent company) abandons the takeover of Air Europa (and will pay \u20ac40 million compensation for that).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>IAG (Iberia) grounds 56 planes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>IAG (British Airways) grounds 34 planes.\u00a0 Everyone over 58 to retire<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Luxair reduces its fleet by 50% (and associated redundancies)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>CSA abolishes its long-haul sector and keeps only 5 medium-haul aircraft<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Eurowings goes into bankruptcy<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Brussels Airline reduces its fleet by 50% (and associated redundancies)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Luftansa plans to ground 72 aircraft (in two installments)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Hop is studying the possibility of reducing fleet and staff by 50%<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>Currently 60 new aircraft stored at Airbus with no buyers in sight (order cancellations) including 18 A350s<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25c6 <\/span>They forecast a minimum of 8,000 grounded planes by September.\u00a0 With an average of 5.8 crews per plane (medium and long haul combined), that would make more than 90,000 unemployed pilots worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n
